Just to note: Seanan's book is now available in a bookstore near you :)

I'll start looking at alternate polling software that might give us a better audit trail.

I really wish whoever was doing this would just stop, though. It only takes one bad element to destroy the array. *sigh*

New Issue Online

Another great new issue is online. Lots of shorts and novellas and poetry and such. I'm gonna take a moment here to draw your attention to something really special in the features section. For many months, we've been running a series of essays on writing by Seanan McGuire (which I hope you've been r...

Quote of the Day

"Subplots are like candy. Oh, sure, they may look colorful and sweet and tasty, but if you keep stuffing them in your face, then not only is your story going to get tremendously fat, but pretty soon it's going to find itself in a displeased-looking editor's chair with a thousand enormous plot holes ...

Fixed this one too. Cut and paste FTL, man. :)

Also fixed. That was a good old fashioned assumption on my part. The gallery was put together months after most of the covers ran, and I probably didn't remember it was yours and simply assumed that any original art of unknown provenance was Dan's. :)

The webmaven apologizes for the error.

Gosh, thanks!

I actually haven't written any fiction in quite some time, but this one prompted me with an irresistible idea, and I was quite pleased with the result.

Feels good to shake the dust off. Maybe I'll do it more. :)

"I need to go to the store," he said, shrugging his shoulders for emphasis. I think of all the various ways that sentence has been presented, that's the most awful. :) Thinking on it further, I think Nate's idea is the best. It might even work better to reverse their order, as well. (Bear in mind t...

Yes, I'm with you that rhythm is important. And I believe I see where you're coming from with accepting the idea of shrugging while one is speaking. Of course, people do that and more while having a conversation. However, I see the crux of the matter as being a technical issue rather than whether I...

*shrug* I still disagree that it's incorrect. No, you cannot shrug with your voice. You can however, shrug while speaking, which is all the notion conveys. It is, as noted, easy to get carried away with these notions, which isn't good either. As I said earlier, its important to consider the rhythm o...

Re: Cosmic Chronicles by Joel Realubit

There were also some technical issues, particularly with dialogue, pacing, and descriptive language: eg (and this are not directly from the story): "I need to go to the store," he shrugged. That kind of construction is simply incorrect. Better to go with he said with a shrug. Stepping in to strongl...

The numbers are fine. For them to not be ok, there'd have to be some target number that we were falling short of. Like all numbers, without context, they don't mean much.

Having said that, bringing new people into the community is always a good thing.

I don't know what you're talking about concerning "non-paying market scams" but my offer was based on not realizing that it costs $1,200 a year to run this work. It is easy to say not to worry about it when you're not the one paying the bill. I wasn't suggesting that money was to be asked of those ...

What is Aphelion

I recently posted this in my own blog, and thought I would share it here for anyone who was interested in how I present the zine to people: What is Aphelion? Aphelion is an original fiction fanzine that has been published on the web since 1997. It was started by Dan Hollifield when the webzine he'd ...

As usual in this discussion, people are getting way far from centre. I know I seem like a grumpy guss every time I do this, but let's establish some perspective: Aphelion is a fanzine. It's not going to be a 501(c)3 organization, because it has no revenues, nor is there any interest on our part to e...

The new issue of Aphelion went online at midnight, May 5th. In this issue, we remember our dear friend Tom Deitz, who has left us all too soon. This edition of Aphelion is dedicated to his memory.
