Gravity is simple: the Earth sucks.

I see no reason why you shouldn't hold a contest. The whole point of having a community of writers is being able to bounce ideas off one another.

"Feed" named one of best thrillers by NPR listners

NPR ran a poll to determine the Top 100 Thriller novels of all time, and our own Seanan McGuire is on the list (writing as Mira Grant) at #74 with FEED. I am so damn proud of her, and it's a well deserved accolade.

Thoughtfood: World-building and the Reader

Every now and then, I run across something that I label "thoughtfood" -- something to just sit and ponder over to see what mysteries it reveals. This is a great essay by Alyssa Rosenberg in The Atlantic magazine on world-building and how it engages (or fails to engage) the reader: http://www.theatla...

The problem is, Tao, that you just took nearly 200 words to explain what your neologism means. That severely limits its ability to catch on, because it's not intuitively obvious. A neologism has to be more than clever, it has to be useful, and the ones that catch on are the ones where you go "Oh, of...

The only caveat I want to add about this: Winning a poll is a tremendous amount of egoboo for the person who wins. But it does bugger-all to help them improve as a writer. So, if you vote, great, but don't forget to go to the thread for that story and actually *talk* about it. The entire point of th...
