Re: Eternity by Zaid Zaman
Bill,
Thanks for looking into that. I'm interested as to whether the works in "Worlds in Small" are being called minimlist because they are super short stories, or if they truly are the minimalism style of literary writing made famous by the French.

-Cameron

Lee,
And stephen king is a great example of a Maximalist writer. Can anyone point out a writer who is both minimalist and science fiction? The two are incompatable as writing techniques...genres...whatever.
I agree...good science fiction CAN be considered literary fiction. I wouldn't bring up ...

Re: Eternity by Zaid Zaman
Jaime,
we are talking about the literary writing style of minimalism, popularized by ann beattie, raymond carver, ernest hemingway and others. minimism is characterized by sparseness of setting, place, and characterization, which puts it directly at odds with the genre of science fiction.
the...

Re: Eternity by Zaid Zaman
lee,
I understand completely what you are saying about vagueness, and I love short stories like "Hills Like White Elephants" (Hemingway), in which a master short story writer can say volumes without putting it all down in narration. I was just saying that in this case, I don't think the story is ...

Re: Eternity by Zaid Zaman
So true! Maybe the story would be better then, with something that gave it an original spin on the whole genre (if you can call it genre, or maybe I should say the whole cliche) of matrix-type stories.

-cameron

Re: Eternity by Zaid Zaman
There are some clichés to be dealt with in this piece, and some punctuation corrections, but aside from the craft flaws, I found the story interesting in a "matrix" sort of way. Something seemed to be lacking, though, in the overall plot and characterization of Jade. I think this is one of those cas...

Re: Prufrock's Problem
I enjoyed this story of Robert's immensely. The character of Prufrock is particularly intriguing. The only critique I could offer up would be to drop the ending. It violates the POV of the entire story, a POV which works because it is from the perspective of Prufrock. I am not against short stories ...

Re: Within A Thousand Years
Interesting story!
I usually don't dig switching from character to character's perspective in such a short story, but I think it worked in this one.
My only complaint is that too much of your plot was summed up with the last character's narrative. I hate long narratives that sum up a short sto...

Re: Beyond Sapiens
The whole story was told in narrative. That just doesn't work for me. When I read a short story I want to have some scenes...some dialogue...some action. Bring the story to life....flesh it out. That is what a short story is about. In a larger work, like a novel, you can afford to go into long narra...

Re: A Journey Too Far by Donald Sullivan
I just finished this one...it was very enjoyable. I am always interested in other writer's visions of the future and what apocalypse will come. I liked the idea of humans bringing in animals from another planet that eventually start breeding and maybe become a threat to the natural ecosystems.
Vila,
I'm not getting to write all the sci-fi or horror that I want to right now because of school. Hi Donald,
>>>I hope my comments about the ending weren't taken as harsh criricism.

No, not at all. I totally hear you on stories that seem to peter out instead of ending right. Thanks for the reviews everyone!
Kevin pretty much hit the nail on the head. I wanted to hint throughout the story that only traces of Matthew were found...dna perhaps, a jawbone...whatever, and he was reconstructed from that.
