I discovered way back when I took over from Cary Semar that some browsers and character sets screw up "smart quotes" and ellipses (when Word or whatever replaces three periods with a special character) and em- and en-dashes. If you see curly-quotes or curly apostrophes, it's usually safer to replace them with the plain-vanilla versions.
