I'm surprised no one has commented on this story yet.
The pace is a bit monotonous, but the story is amazing in the way it blends science and magic as coequal forces. While seeming to be moralistic at times, it ultimately asserts moral relativity. The most overreaching theme, though, is that of manipulation.
