I took it that he was dead (or just about to be), and experiencing hell. The med techs zapped his heart and brought him back to life, as I saw it.

Marvelous detail, but no plot or characterization to speak of. Sort of like a riddle, in a way, though the idea of being dead and in hell is clear enough. But what happens next, and how--and why--did he get there in the first place?
This seems more like a writing exercise than a story. Still, it's well done.
