I never have understood these sorts of things. Is this spam designed to somehow overflow the forums? Or is this done simply to annoy real users?

In this case, what looks like plain text actually contains lots of embedded links (basically everything that looks blank in Mark's quoted version). Presumably they hope that in scrolling through the gobbledygook (with apologies to turkeys and 'gooks'), some people might inadvertently click on on of them, triggering untold shenanigans and foofaraw. (Also folderol.)
