Re: Aphelicon The First
I was confused by the references to 'Bob' (I usually go by 'Bob' when not writing stories, reports, cheques, etc.) until I checked Dan's earlier posts and realized that you probably meant 'Rob' -- Rob Wynne, aka webmaven, aka Doc.

Wish I'd been there, but it probably would have driven me crazy -- can't drink alcohol (the ONE THING THEY SAID I ABSOLUTELY SHOULDN'T DO whilst taking the meds I've been on for over 10 years), and with type II diabetes, have to watch carbs (pasta salads, bbq sauces -- which tend to have lots o' sugar) and fats (target cholesterol numbers for diabetics are LOWER than for non-diabetics). Fortunately, abusing my Vast Editorial Powers allows me to Take Revenge on the Cosmos (or at least on those unfortunates brave enough to place their children at my mercy).

'Scuse me -- I have to go drown my sorrows in a low-fat no-sugar added something or other. (sniff)

Robert M.

No worries, Kate. I don't go by Bob, but I'm happy to answer it. Call me whatever you want, as long as you call me. *wink*

Larissa and I had a fantastic time, and didn't leave until about noon on Sunday, after dragging Daniel downtown for breakfast at The Grill, an Athens institution if ever there was.

Robert M, come next year. We'll make sure to accomodate your diet. I myself drank very little, as I don't actually like beer. :) I'm sure we'll manage to find something for you to eat. :)

Gee, I don't know how your husband would feel about you being surrounded by so many strange men -- and let's face it, Aphelion staff and writers are stranger than most ... and that's even if Dan wore his less-tiny shorts.

Robert M....Maybe we could have an ApheliWest at my place sometime...??

How does Dan keep that kudzu on his motorcycle when he drives down the road? :)

I wish I could have been there!

Alas, I was otherwise tasked with being a Best Man (in full peasant costume, no less) in a tiny, broiling-hot Ukranian Orthodox church, marrying off my best friend. Maybe next year.

Bring on those pictures!

Nate

Re: Aphelicon The First
I'll do all I can to be there.

Or, if you care to widen the franchise like Kate suggested, I'm perfectly willing to host Aphelicon North here in Wisconsin at any time the snow isn't flying. (Which gives us a window of almost three whole months!) If I can fit 70 at my house for my son's birthday/pumpkin carving party, I should be able handle a small crowd of crazed SF lovers.

As an added draw, I could start the first annual Stick Nate's Head in a Bucket of Ice Water contest to get even for all those reviews (but keep it attached to my shoulders, please). :D Anybody? Buehler?

Nate
Re: Aphelicon The First
On the one hand, having these gatherings around the country sounds lovely from the point of view of just having them.

But if we have too many of them, we won't be able to get people to come to THIS one, and I can only afford to travel so much!!

Quandries, quandries!

Re: Aphelicon The First photos
... Okay, I can sort of kind of guess who SOME of the people are. The skinny gray-haired dude who looks like he may be pret' near nekkid must be Dan. The blonde lady in the (turquoise? -- Guys don't DO shades and subtle hues. We do RED. BLUE. GREEN. YELLOW. Like that. Also, to quote Neanderthal Buffy, Fire bad. Tree pretty.) blouse is probably Kate.

Folks are mostly sitting down, so I can't judge relative heights to separate the 'giants' from the merely large. A little help, please?

And is the Fred Building anywhere near the Barney Tower?

Robert M.

Oh, lord, next time he'll probably wear a thong ... :o

Robert M.
I flew in to Atlanta from Los Angeles, then drove to Athens.
It's more like "I'll go anywhere for lunch and good conversation"....
Or maybe just a sad commentary on my lack of a social life!
And Dan in hot pants is well, pretty hot!

Re: Aphelicon The First

Hmm, sounds Dan has experience at wearing a thong (shudder).

And he has proof (witnesses, probably bribed with Aphelicon leftover Meat and Booze and Brews) that he doesn't run around half naked all the time. But does he have proof that he doesn't run around all naked half the time? (double shudder)

Robert M.
I would not. Those things are uncomfortable. Besides, Kate overstates the skimpiness of the shorts. They are normal length boxer-style swim trunks. Perfectly respectable beach, pool, or back yard in the hot sun attire.
Add a shirt and a pair of flip-flops and I'd be perfectly legal and respectable enough for any resturant.
As a contrast, last night when I visited the neighbors I was wearing khaki (sp?) pants and a dress shirt (button-down collar and everything) so I have proof that I don't run around half naked all the time. LOL!

It was set at 5500 characters. I just bumped it up to 30k characters. If you wanna write something longer than that, submit it to run in the features section. :)What is the word limit on these things, anyway?

Re: Aphelicon The First
Well, goodness.

So many glowing reviews... How can a mere mortal hope to compare when the next Aphelicon rolls around?

I must say, these are some of the first real "looks" I've gotten at the personalities of most of you. Not so much from your own descriptions as provided by others, but how each of you viewed the next in turn speaks volumes.

You're all quite interesting characters.

Nate

Re: Aphelicon The First

Yeah, though oddly enough I only took about 4 photos during the gathering. I think of all of us, Kate took the most, but I haven't gotten my hands on those yet.

Usually, I take anywhere from 50-200 photos for an event like this, in the hopes that two or three of them are really worthwhile.
No, I forgot to bring a camera. I figured Rob would anyway. He's pratically a walking historian, based on all the photos he has on his site. ;)

Tasty?? What, did he say "Bite me!", and you took him literally? Man, now I'm sure Kate's husband won't want to co-host Aphelicon West ...

Robert M.And a right tasty handful it was, too....

Re: Aphelicon The First
It does the heart good to hear how well the first con went! I wish I could have been there, if only to be immortalized in the descriptions! You writers! What a great power to be able to create stone from nothing! To change ideas into reality! Give me a spring and a summer warnning and I'll be happy to tithe again for con II! It's worth it just to hear about undescribable drinks and unviewable visions (thongs!)!

My two wedding summer did give me some information to add to this thread, can diabetics drink glutten free beer? I know where to get some if they can. If not, then I'm sorry to bring up the subject in the first place.

I hope everyone is doing well and if you have another get together before the next con, please telll, I would be greatful to join!

Jacki Powers

Sadly, in my case, it ain't the carbs that would be the problem as far as drinkables go. I'm on meds for another condition and the one warning, writ in foot high letters of white-hot flame, is:

NO ALCOHOL.

And people who have suffered my editorial meddling wonder why I'm so -- so -- editorial!

Robert M....can diabetics drink glutten free beer?
