Re: Back Issues?

Post by Robert_Moriyama »

While looking through the reviews of back issues, I saw a series of comments on a story called "The Voyages of The Good Ship Horus." Unfortunately, there is no link available to this story. The new format does not have a link to back issues. It would be nice to be able to go back and read a story that has drawn favorable comment in the forum.

::)
Actually, there IS a link to Back Issues, at the top of the Archives page. Rob set it up because the job of updating the Archives / Author Index was so huge that it was going to be quite a while before it could be completed. (Rob's original preference was to forgo having past Index pages and Editorials directly available. However, the electronic equivalent of The Most Annoying Sound in the World convinced him to relent.)

I do so miss the "Edit Post" button so that I could go back and fix typos.

Sigh.

There IS a 'Modify' button just above the message text window (between 'Quote' and 'Delete'), but it isn't always there for some reason ... It will NEVER show up above a post made by someone else, but I found that it disappeared from messages I posted in Nate's first Challenge, too, either after some time interval (change of date?) or after a logout / login.

:-?

The back issues page goes up to Issue 109, but after that we switched to the new format. Each issue is now mutiple pages and can't be archived as a single link. I guess the best thing to do is complain to Tao Pheonix, the Archives Editor. But I'm sure that he's working as fast as he can all ready.

I do appologise for the inconvenience.

Dan
Actually...it can! Watch, as I amaze and astound you.

I've figured out how to archive the back issues, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it.

The RSS feed will also serve as a sort of ersatz archive, for at least a while, because it will have links to all the content. :)

I'll try and get the back issues up to date once I flip the August issue.

The back issues index has now been updated through the July issue. Click on the Archives button, and then on the link to the list of Back Issues.

Looks pretty cool to me, however you did it.

Would these RSS thingies or some other black magic be helpful in updating the author index? (Perhaps that's Tao's realm. I don't think anyone ever said who does what.)

Not trying to push. Just hopeful to be listed someday...

Tao is working dilligently on making a master index of the entire run of Aphelion. Once he's done that, we'll figure out a way of making that data available in a manner that will be easier to update.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I just found the "search" feature in the back issues section of the archives.

Way, Way Cool!

This way, even though I'm still not in the name list yet, someone who's unfamiliar could look up "Another Sarah" or "Alligator Tears" or even just search under any author's name, like... I dunno, Kailhofer, maybe. And it seems to be just story listings, not posts, so if someone did actually want to find one of my stories, they wouldn't have to search through 800+ posts like in a regular Google search to find something worth reading! (Thought I should say that before Robert did. :P) It doesn't take you directly to the story, but it does to the index page where they appeared.

Again, cool.

You just found that because I only installed it yesterday. I'd been playing with a variety of search engine widgets, and that's the one I found that made me least unhappy.

For the moment, it only searches on the index pages in the back issues directory, not on the stories themselves. This makes it pretty much impossible to find anything by someone on the editorial staff, but everyone else should be locatable.
