PM problem

Post by kailhofer »

Rob,

The PM system is giving me errors. I tried to send you a PM about it, but it wouldn't let me. I get "Net::SMTP fatal error: unable to create Net::SMTP object smtp.america.net. at (eval 5) line 3." I got the same error trying to send to 2 other people.

I've also had several people get errors (I don't know which error, sorry), so they think it didn't get through & then they send it again. But then I get the message over and over. I got 6 from one writer and 4 from another.

Hope this helps.

That makes me chuckle.

"Hmm... the PM system is down... let's see if it will let me PM to tech support!"
Well, yeah. I agree it sounds funny, but just because PMing to one group didn't work doesn't mean that it won't work for all. There's plenty of PMs that I try to reply to that give an error, but if I pick that person from the members list and click to send them a PM, it will go through. Others will 'reply to' just fine. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

I also wanted Rob to know that I tried telling him about a problem privately first. I'm sure enough of my public grumbles keep me permanently on the $#!% list as it is. I do try to play well with others...

review your outgoing email virus checker in combination with any loaded spyware? ????

Not sure if this was meant to be a joke or not.

The PM system doesn't use email. You can click on a member's name and then choose to send them a Private Message. It's kinda like email in that only the person on the other end sees it, but it's still just a message here in YABB. You use the same message interface as when you post. People send me stories that way for the challenges, and I frequently send rewrite requests or receipt acknowledgments back. Virus checkers never get near them, and they're just text.

Maybe it's my fault. I do use it the PM system here a lot, and I store the winning entries in it... As a matter of fact there's 11 current messages in it now without the stored ones. Perhaps I'm my own worst enemy. :-/

I have 116 PMs, 0 new in my Inbox (haven't deleted any since the system went live), so I don't think volume should be a problem. Then on the other hand, the Challenge entries are a lot longer than typical PMs, so ... Maybe you could try copy-and-pasting them into files on your computer and deleting some of the stored PMs?
