I had plenty of examples for inspiration -- most of them showing up right here on Aphelion. and, for a while, once, I was getting replies to such sites in my personal email. Seems the Russian spammers had figured out a way to steal and use my personal email address, though I really don't know how or even why, as I never got billed for anything they were selling. I reported the fraud to Yahoo, and they told me there was nothing they could do about it.

Too bad I can't send this back at 'em.

It has reached the point where I have to stomp on something every hour or two... Unfortunately, the Captcha or whatever registration screener we are using is not preventing dozens of presumably junk member registrations every day. Certain domain names in e-mail addresses have been banned (they can't post, even if they register), but a lot of spammers use gmail addresses, and I don't feel safe in just zapping all gmail users. (Especially since the Webmaven himself has one!)

(I am currently assuming that anybeing registered with a @....pl or @....ru e-mail address is likely a spammer or spammer-to-be. "@seopowa.com" addresses belong to a company that sells search engine optimization services, so they get purged whenever I find them...)

Why can't we go to an e-mail registration, allowing people to sign up by sending an e-mail to maybe a current or new editor/registrar where the proposed member choose their own password and username, but the registrar approves it and sends them a return e-mail to join in along with a form letter on how to enjoy Aphelion.

My thinking is if spammers are using software to register and post spam, then the software program will not be able to do this step. It would take more effort for a spammer to actually sign up and then use software to post spam.

From your end, am I right about this or is there some reason this would not work as well as I think it will?

Also if this is done, why not do a 90% purge of previous usernames except for the ones you are familiar with (going back to Aphelion's inception), the ones that are actual names, but purge the ones that are no more than a bunch of letters thrown together in no particular order. Even if you do remove someone who comes back, how hard would it be for them to sign up again. This way, none of the current bogus usernames can be used for future spam.

My suspicion is that there are actual live people doing the registering, and getting paid some tiny amount -- the internet equivalent of telephone sales or solicitation for charity. Whether a two-step process would discourage them or not, I don't know. (In China, prisoners are forced to play MMO games (like World of Warcraft) to accumulate gold and special items that can be sold for real money to players too lazy to obtain them the hard way.)
