Neil 'needed' a kitchen only because he wanted to be more real, or at least to seem more real. Presumably he had 'seen' TV programs or YouTube clips set in kitchens and deduced that real people had them. Whether he actually understood what a kitchen was for may be irrelevant... Of course, he may well have been building a virtual world for himself, and even simulating 'normal' activities as part of his evolution. (Imagine how much he could learn by tapping into a server hosting "The Sims Online", and digging down into individual players' systems to observe their avatars "at home"!)
(This question is not quite as profound as Kirk's famous query, "Why does God -- need a starship?", but it's close.)
