In essence, this is a "Ghost Whisperer" episode without the need for a Melinda Gordon-type as an intermediary. The mother gets a chance to explain (if not make amends for) actions that have led to anger and resentment lasting beyond the grave; the son learns how much pain his so-polite rejection of her as his mother (always calling her by her name) caused; and both gain a measure of peace from the exchange.

(Maybe that's what was missing... cleavage!)
