I hardly know where to start with this one . . . the prose is lyrical, the characters lovingly detailed -- including their failings . . . the setting is sensual, the dialog convincing, and the plot precisely fitted together.

It's like the dessert cart in a five-star restaurant.

Well -- maybe not as delightful as that in all respects; the story has a share of sadness, and a few unsettling moments -- but everything is purposeful and in proportion.

If I ever see something like this in a Challenge entry, I will give it an unbroken column of 10's.
