Flashbacks don't often work well in short stories, but this method was used quite effectively here.

Just a tad heavy on info-dump delivered through dialog, but the needed information would have stretched the story to several times this length otherwise. Keeping it short kept the energy moving through it, though; not a bad tradeoff.
