Well, like the rest of here at the Dharma project, it's hard to get anything done on our computer, because every 108 minutes Locke comes in and starts pushing buttons!

It's enough to make you feel "Lost." :)

(If you don't watch the American ABC network, that won't make any sense, sorry.)

Seriously, I think there's a lot of factors involved, not the least of which is the fact that it's hard to know Aphelion exists. Many of the links that point to other magazines aren't reciprocal, and it's not like anyone can afford to advertise.

I got Aphelion onto a page for "webzines" in the Wikipedia, but some wandering editor slashed the heck out of it. My plan was to give Aphelion & Nightwatch their own Wikipedia pages to help promote my story, but that's not going well. I tried emailing news releases to about 60 Chicago-area newspapers to tell them about Nightwatch & my story (because of it's Chicago connection, and with Jeff's permission). From the hit counter, I sure can't tell that any one of those printed it.

I don't know what else can be done for free to get more readers, and subsequently more people who comment.

I, myself, just don't have time anymore to spend 3 hours per story to provide a "Natean review" as Dan E. put it. I'm too busy making ends meet & raising kids.

Plus, if Wishbone would ever let me stop explaning my story, I could get on with the others... ;)

Nate

A few observations:

1 We seem to be getting as many (if not more) posts in Administrivia as we get in threads relating to stories (and rarely, poetry). The total number of posts is probably not THAT much lower than before ... (Hard to tell without checking the dates on Administrivia posts and counting them by month, and I'm obsessing about other things at the moment. Any volunteers?)

2 Even in the pre-YaBB days, a lot of posts were only vaguely related to that month's fiction and poetry -- with the separate Administrivia section to segregate most of that stuff from commentary on the current issue's content, maybe it only LOOKS like traffic has diminished. (Not that we don't wander way far off topic in the threads that are SUPPOSED to be commentary on stories/poetry ...)

3 The ol' hit counter is still climbing pretty fast -- up to about 243,000 last time I looked. Hey Doc -- does the counter register a hit if somebody goes directly to the lettercol (jumping to
http://www.aphelion-webzine.com/cgi-bin ... br>without going to the root URL first)? When did we hit 200,000? It doesn't seem that long ago ...

In udda woids, we ain't dead yet.

Robert "I should be uploading December/January material by now" M.

PS Just checked -- we reached 200,000 (estimated) hits on November 7, 2004. We are now at 242,856 (or so) -- almost 43K hits in 389 days, or 110 hits PER DAY.

You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.

I've had the issue about 2 months now:
http://www.aphelion-webzine.com/cgi-bin ... 1134972219

The maxlength is set to 30k, which is pretty large for a text message. Are the messages you're trying to post longer than that? Does it happen in multiple browsers? Are the messages plain text, or are you using any special characters?
